Stunt: Texas Chainsaw Pumpkin Carving
Client: Fremont Oktoberfest
Over the years Muir has taken advantage of Fremont's oddball sense of humor to promote the annual Fremont Oktoberfest, the primary fundraiser of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce. Central to the festival is the Texas Chainsaw Pumpkin Carving Contest.
In a loud, wacky and wonderfully messy event, costumed contestants carve giant pumpkins with chainsaws, concentrating on gore rather than artistry. Media and the public love it. The first year KING 5 News (NBC) fed the tapes to CNN and the event was broadcast nationwide.
The Texas Chainsaw Pumpkin Carving media preview-held the week before the festival-draws all networks and local daily newspapers, and the media attention to the festival has grown each year. Prominent placement of media stories has helped the event grow from an attendance of 5,000 the first year to over 35,000 in 2002.
